Electoral Reform is a Must before Going to Elections

FEFA’s leadership met Mrs. Zuhra Bayan, chairperson of the Electoral complaints Commission on January 25, 2021 to talk about the upcoming elections, electoral reforms and ECC’s preparation for upcoming elections. FEFA’s acting director talked about the need for the electoral reform and said, “Both electoral commissions needs reform and it’s time for commencing reforms.” He added that FEFA has submitted 2 recommendation packages on electoral reform to the ECC. He said that the recommendation packages has clarified the areas that need reform and has specific recommendation on how to implement the reform. He recommend the chairperson of the ECC to go through FEFA’s recommendation packages and bring the necessary reform to the ECC in order to perform better than before and assure people that ECC has the capability and capacity of ensuring electoral justice. Then, Mr. Omid Noorzai, head of FEFA’s Election and Peace Department talked about the need for reform and said, “The ECC must develop its strategic plan given the lessons it learned from the previous elections and shortcomings it witnessed. The ECC cannot manage its affairs and achieve its goals without having a strategic plan therefore FEFA recommends the ECC to develop its strategic plan first. He also recommend the chairperson of ECC to specify the vision and mission of the ECC based on its strategic plan and amend its procedures and guidelines accordingly. Subsequently, the chairperson of ECC thanked FEFA for its proposal and usual cooperation with ECC and added that the ECC has just completed its lessons learned sessions and is about to prepare and share its report. She added that ECC is committed to reform and will undertake the reforming measures. She also added that the ECC is working on its strategic plan and tries to develop a comprehensive plan to make sure it can ensure electoral justice. At the end of the meeting, FEFA’s leadership sated that FEFA is always ready to cooperate with ECC to ensure electoral justice.
