Executive director of FEFA met with first deputy chairman of Meshrano-Jirga

The first deputy chairman of Meshrano-Jirga: Meshrano-Jirga will make decision about presidential decree on electoral reform based on national interest of Afghanistan. Kabul- the executive director of FEFA, Mohammad Yousuf Rasheed, met with first deputy chairman of Meshrano-Jirga on December 28, 2015 to talk about presidential decree on electoral reform which was rejected by Wolesi Jirga of National Assembly. At the beginning of the meeting, the executive director of FEFA presented information on importance of election and the urgent need for electoral reform. He also said that the rejection of presidential decree on electoral reform by Wolesi Jirga is in contradiction to constitution and well of nation. He added, “According to article 79 of constitution the government has to submit the legislative decree on electoral reform to the National Assembly in the course of thirty days beginning from the first session of the National Assembly but based on article Wolesi Jirga was not authorized to include the proposal for amendment of the electoral law in its working agenda during the last year of the legislative period. However, Wolesi Jirga acted in contradiction to law and included the presidential decree on electoral reform in its working agenda during the last year of legislative period and decided to reject it.” The executive director of FEFA urged the members of Meshrano-Jirga to make legal and logical decisions on electoral issues. Subsequently, the first deputy chairman of Meshrano-Jirga, Mohammad Alam Izadyar, thanked FEFA for its proceedings toward electoral reforms and said, “FEFA is the only election observation institution that referred to Meshrano-Jirga to share its concerns over electoral reform with Meshrano-Jirga.” he added, “On behalf of Meshrano-Jirga I thank FEFA for its proceeding toward electoral reform.” He then said that electoral reform is an important principle for holding a transparent election and institutionalizing democracy in the country therefore Meshrano-Jirga will make decision on electoral issues based on national interest and public demand.
